On 19 July 1964, His Eminence Rufino J. Cardinal Santos, D.D., Archbishop of Manila, inaugurated and blessed the Loyola Retreat House (LRH). Situated atop Nieves Hills, overlooking Laguna de Bay and the surrounding mountains, the retreat complex was designed by Architect Felipe M. Mendoza and built on a seven-hectare property generously donated by Don Mariano J. Santos and his heirs.
Constructed during the opening years of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) and entrusted to the Jesuits of the Philippine Province, LRH became a leading center for spiritual formation, retreats, and renewal. It served not only the Ateneo de Manila community—its administrators, faculty, students, and staff—but also generations of religious, clergy, professionals, and lay faithful from across the Philippines.
Beginning in 1986, the Philippine Jesuits partnered with other religious congregations in the administration of the retreat house: the Hijas de Jesús (1986–2006), followed by the Marian Missionaries of the Holy Cross (2007–2022).
On 15 August 2022, LRH-SACA commenced a comprehensive restoration and renewal of the retreat complex, building upon the successful conservation of the Mirador Jesuit Villa Retreat House in Baguio (2017–2019) and the Cebu Center for Ignatian Spirituality – Jesuit Retreat House in Cebu (2019–2021). The restoration projects were supervised by Fr. Jose V. C. Quilongquilong SJ, and Fr. Rene Pio B. Javellana SJ.
On 23 October 2023, His Excellency Most Rev. Ruperto C. Santos, D.D., Bishop of Antipolo, presided over the Rite of Rededication and Blessing of the renewed Loyola Retreat House – Spirituality and Art Center (LRH-SACA). He was joined by Very Rev. Primitivo E. Viray, Jr., SJ, Provincial Superior of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus, together with Jesuits, religious, lay collaborators, benefactors, staff, retreatants, and local government officials.
The restoration of the Ignatius Wing, Xavier Wing, and the Chapel was made possible through the generosity of the LH Foundation and the Liu Family, in honor of their foundress, Dame Norma H. Liu. Numerous benefactors and friends of the Philippine Jesuit Aid Association, Inc. likewise contributed to the renovation of other buildings, prayer spaces, and landscaped grounds throughout the retreat center.
Today, situated in Angono, celebrated as the Art Capital of the Philippines, LRH-SACA continues its mission as a center where Ignatian spirituality, artistic expression, cultural heritage, and ecological stewardship come together in an atmosphere of prayer, contemplation, and discernment. It offers pilgrims and visitors a sacred space in which faith, beauty, creativity, and care for our common home enrich one another.
Through its renewed identity as Loyola Vista de Angono, the retreat house invites all who come to discover a broader vista—a renewed perspective on one’s relationship with self, family, community, creation, and God. Faithful to the Ignatian tradition, it remains a sanctuary dedicated to spiritual renewal, discernment, and the service of faith that promotes justice, inspiring all to find God in all things.
